What we are
An advertising-funded publisher. That is stated at the top of every page rather than buried, because a reader who does not know how a site is paid for cannot properly weigh what it says. Our advertising disclosure sets out the arrangement in full.
What we are not
- Not a shop. Nothing is sold here and no payment is taken here.
- Not a testing laboratory. We publish no detection rates or benchmarks of our own, and we say why on our how we test page.
- Not affiliated with any vendor. We are not connected to Surfshark B.V., Nord Security or any other brand we write about.
- Not a news organisation, and we do not present ourselves as one.
How we work
Primary sources first, independent laboratories for anything measurable, explicit uncertainty where the sources run out, and a dated correction note when we get something wrong. The full rules, including the list of things we refuse to do, are in the editorial policy.
How we treat your data
We removed the tracking rather than adding a consent banner in front of it. No cookies, no analytics, no advertising pixels, no third-party requests, no fonts loaded from another company’s server. The cookie policy shows you how to confirm that in your own browser.
The illustrations
Every diagram on this site was drawn for it as an original SVG file, in the site’s own colour scheme, with a text description for screen readers. We use no product screenshots and no stock photography.
